Water Heater Tips
Water Heater
Thermostats
To prevent scalding and to lower your electric
or gas bill, lower your water heaters thermostat down to 120 degrees. A
common cause of burns is scalding hot water from water heaters.
If your water heater cannot keep up with the
demand for hot water, turning up the thermostat is not the answer.
Instead, add a second water heater or upgrade to one larger hot water
heater.
Broken Water Heaters
A water heater break is a common cause of
flooding in homes. To prevent this damage, install a drain pan underneath
your hot water heater. Periodically check to make sure that the drain is
working and free of debris.
To prevent water heater breaks, drain your
tank periodically to clear sediment. Tanks can rust out if debris is
allowed to collect on the bottom
Cold Water Heater
If you loose heat, check to make sure the
pilot light is still lit if you have a gas water heater.
If you have an electric water heater, check
the fuse and hit the reset on the thermostat.
If these steps do not work, you may need to
call a plumber.
Saving Energy on
Water Heaters
To save money on your energy bill, consider
installing a water tank jacket and insulating your hot water pipes. Check
with your water heater manufacturer first to see if they recommend extra
insulation.
If you want to further reduce energy bills,
install a tankless water heater. It saves money by only heating water when
it is needed instead of keeping a tank hot all of the time.
